When starting out in Adobe Photoshop the software can be very confusing. In the beginning stages of learning it is easy to get overwhelmed and stressed. Throughout the process of my internship with Addis Enterprises I have been able to learn the basics of this program fairly well, but here are 5 tips I wish I would have known from the start.
5 Things to Know as a Beginner Photoshopper
When starting out in Adobe Photoshop the software can be very confusing. In the beginning stages of learning it is easy to get overwhelmed and stressed. Throughout the process of my internship with Addis Enterprises I have been able to learn the basics of this program fairly well, but here are 5 tips I wish I would have known from the start.
1. Perfection Is The Number One Ruler
Always use rulers in order to have perfect spacing of layers within your photoshop document. Rulers ensure that things that need to be lined up are actually perfectly in line with one another. They also allow for the utmost precision when creating your artwork. Rulers give zero room for spacing and alignment issues to go unseen.
2. Kern Your Letters Correctly
As a beginner Photoshopper, I was not aware of what kerning even was. Kerning is known as the spacing between lettering. As I've been learning this software I’ve realized the importance of spacing between certain letters, especially when jumping from font to font. Every font's spacing is different, and the automated Kerning might not be visually pleasing, so make sure you are adjusting spacing between each individual letter so letters become spaced to perfection.
3. Name Your Layers
Having various layers can get extremely confusing extremely fast. When you name your layers according to what each layer is, this allows you to be able to quickly select the layer you need to in order to edit the piece. Rather than clicking through layers trying to guess which layer is which, you can easily tap the correct one on the first try if you name it accordingly.
4. Trust The Process
"Rage quitting" is extremely normal when trying to learn this software. While undergoing the process of learning Photoshop you sometimes need to take a few deep breaths. It gets easier. Allow yourself to just go with the flow of things, and if you have to step away for a moment that is okay. Pick up where you left off. Do not give up.
5. Keyboard Shortcuts Save You
When beginning to use Photoshop there are lots of different tools and things to learn the ins and outs of. Once you start to get into the groove of things, you will slowly begin to understand the keyboard commands. These commands will allow you to work through the program without having to manually search for all the different tools. These commands will help you navigate the software in half the time you would without them.
